Recently, Japan has held as many international music events and competitions as those held in Europe and America. However, these events are mainly for professionals. It is very difficult to get the general public genuinely involved in international gatherings for amateurs. There are several examples of successful festivals for young musicians, such as the Pacific Music Festival which is held every year in Sapporo or the Asian Youth Orchestra series held in the Kyushu area in which participants must undergo rigorous auditions in hope of becoming professional musicians of tomorrow.
However, even if they do not have special natural talent or were not brought up in a special environment, the youth of today have a pure and natural desire to be a part of an orchestra. It could be said that the desire to create one's own music stems from the cultural environment of that society.
This is why I feel that this international music festival reflects the cultural level of Japan. What impressions will the musicians who have come from all over the world take home with them? Moreover, what friendships will be made during the event? This festival is a new form of grass roots diplomacy. No matter which country, the best professionals are nurtured from a broad field of amateurs. This is why I would like to see international orchestra festivals such as this continue, and would like to see the concept actively pursued in other fields as well.
